Proximity VOIP in Infinite Backrooms

Distance is silence — turn voice chat into a survival tool, not chaos.

Proximity VOIP

The Multiplayer Demo Update made Infinite Backrooms social: public lobbies, up to six players, and proximity VOIP / chat. Teammates only hear you when you are close. Wander too far and silence becomes the companion Steam promised. This page is the dedicated voice-discipline guide that sits beside Co-op Multiplayer.

Why proximity voice matters here

In a seamless infinite world, unlimited global voice would destroy liminal tension. Proximity voice restores geography: information has a range. That design choice creates both horror and coordination puzzles.

If you treat VOIP like a Discord always-on call, you will yell across Supermarket aisles and wonder why nobody answers. Close the gap, or accept text/emotes.

Pre-flight audio checklist

  1. Headphones on — speakers cause echo loops in six-player lobbies.
  2. OS mic permission granted after first launch (How to Play the Demo).
  3. Push-to-talk vs voice activation agreed in lobby chat before spawn.
  4. Music and overlay sounds lowered so footsteps stay readable (Controls).
  5. Confirm System Requirements so stutter is not mistaken for “voice bugs.”

Distance rules that prevent rage

  • Regroup points: name a landmark before any scout leaves VOIP range.
  • Callouts: short and local — “Bacteria left of pillar,” not novels.
  • Silence is data: if the channel dies, someone walked away or the world ate the group.
  • No Entity nights: still use proximity discipline; tourism lobbies that scream constantly are exhausting.

Pair these rules with Survive Bacteria when threat is on, and No Entity Mode when it is off.

Roles that make six players viable

  • Anchor: stays audible, holds the seed card (Seed System).
  • Scout pair: never solo-silent for more than an agreed timer.
  • Timer: calls regroup every few minutes.

Exit hunts need one designated validator so five people do not scream “Exit!” at every doorway (Find the Exit).

Failure modes unique to proximity VOIP

  • Stacking six players in one panic cluster until nobody can hear footsteps
  • Splitting into three silent pairs with no return plan
  • Hosts muting newcomers instead of restating rules
  • Blaming “broken voice” when the real issue is fifty meters of Pool Rooms echo

Practice drills (solo and duo)

Solo calibration: walk away from a friend until voice cuts, mark that distance mentally in Office Rooms vs Parking Lot.

Duo leash: keep conversation continuous for ten minutes while moving — if silence hits, you failed the leash.

Six-player tabletop: before launching, rehearse the 30-second lobby script from the co-op guide out loud.

After patches

Voice UX may improve during Early Access (planned ~August 14, 2026). Re-read Steam notes via Multiplayer Demo Update and the Demo Changelog when mic menus change.

Getting Started, Guides Hub, Environments Hub for callout vocabulary, Seed Notepad to store “voice range notes” beside landmarks.

Proximity VOIP is not a side feature. In Infinite Backrooms it is how friendship and fear share the same volume slider.

Callout language that survives neon

Agree on a tiny glossary before the first split: Bacteria, Exit candidate, regroup, seed, and the five biome names. If five players invent five nicknames for Pool Rooms, proximity voice becomes comedy instead of coordination. Write the glossary once in your club chat and paste it into the lobby every session.

When someone panics, the Anchor lowers volume instead of matching the scream. Short sentences travel farther through bad mics than paragraphs. If you need a longer plan, stop moving, form a huddle inside VOIP range, then move again. Infinite Backrooms punishes planning while sprinting.

Solo players still benefit

Even alone, rehearse the model: information has range. Walk away from a loud environmental hum until it softens, then treat teammates the same way later. Pair this drill with Exploration Tips and the Environments Hub.

Before Early Access expands multiplayer UX, master the demo’s harsh simplicity. Silence is not a bug — it is the feature sold in the Multiplayer Demo Update copy. Revisit Getting Started whenever new players join and skip mic setup.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about Infinite Backrooms.

Why can’t I hear my teammate in Infinite Backrooms?

Proximity VOIP only transmits when you are close. Walk toward them, then check mic permissions, PTT binds, and headset routing.

Is proximity chat optional?

You can play solo without a mic. In public lobbies, voice is optional but highly useful if the group agrees on PTT rules.

Does Bacteria care about voice?

Treat noise and panic as player problems first. Keep callouts short so the group can still hear the world.
